The female students were shot by the soldiers who posed as troops of the Chinese Nationalist Army, but were actually Japanese. Their aim was to kill everyone but one, who was their spy so that she could infiltrate and sabotage (an important airfield)

One other girl survived as she was trying to lead her classmate to safety (not knowing she was a spy). The Japanese did not shoot at them because they feared they might kill the spy by mistake.
