I saw the movie the Conspirators and in the movie Mary was executed in her stocking feet?...does anyone know if it is or was a common practice for female prisoners to go to the gllows in stocking feet I know ladies have to be in stocking feet for the gas chamber just wondering thanks?

 

A lot of times the hangman would be given the footwear of the condemned as part of their payment. Also, in case they urinated it would not run down in their shoes, or boots. I have seen pictures of Mary Surrat hanging and when you enlarge it you can see she is in stocking with no shoes. In the gas chamber their shoes are removed to keep gas from being trapped inside them.
