Very nice pictures from Machinal! I have a question: why girl is almost always barefoot? It is not usual for conventional US executions, is it the part of the story?

 

I don't think it's in tradition that women go to execution chamber barefooted, historically. It may be this case in Machinal because it's a play and actresses often go shoeless on the stage.

 

In South Africa the gallows had in some cases bare feet painted on the trap, as a sign of where to put the condemned's feet. Most were hanged barefoot.
