Reign of the Seven Spellblades (Nanatsu no Maken ga Shihai Suru) manga by Sakae Esuno, adapted from volume 1, chapter 2 of the light novels by Bokuto Uno. Hibiya Nanao, a samurai of Tourikueisen Domain in the land of Yamatsu, is leading the rearguard of her army after a defeat by General Souma Yoshihisa, manages to cut her way into Souma's camp, and is barely slowed enough by his son-in-law Yasutsuna to get surrounded by his ashigaru. Souma orders the ashigaru to run her through -- but they're frozen in place at the last second by Theodore McFarlane, a traveling mage from Yelgland in the far west, who offers to spirit Nanao away from the battlefield to be trained as a mage herself.
