The King of Chu was defeated and driven out of his capital by the Wu army.  Later, he came back and drove out the enemy.  When he returned to his palace, the concubines greeted him.  But since they had been soiled by the invaders, they chose to commit suicide before their king as atonement for their loss of chastity: it probably is the scene with the most number of women commiting suicide in TV drama:
