38: The Chicago College for Young Women
A week later Cheryl was attending a routine meeting between the Chicago Police Commissioner & the Prison Governor in her role as minute taker. Normally she found these meetings deadly dull however her ears pricked up as the Commissioner & the Governor chatted before the meeting started
The Governor asked, “Well Jim, what’s new outside in the world of law enforcement?”
The Commissioner replied, “The only thing that has occurred recently that is significantly out of the ordinary is the apparent disappearance of a number of new young female immigrants. Our current theory is that a new gang is in town who specialise in sex trafficking. However the investigation is at an early stage so we don’t know much just now”.
That night the three murderesses mulled over the implications of what Cheryl had overheard.
The older girl said, “It seems to me that we should stop targeting immigrants & start looking for victims elsewhere”.
April replied, “But where Cheryl? We decided to avoid going after prostitutes as that would be noticed by the mob, who would eventually share the information with the police, as happened in New York”
Cheryl said, “Why don’t we revisit the Refuge approach that worked so well for the Edwards for quite a while. What finally did for them was when the former Refuge girls got together & started to realise that several of their number had disappeared”
Beth said thoughtfully, “We could ensure that that didn’t happen by simply killing them all when they “Graduated” rather than selecting victims”
Cheryl & April looked at their friend & began to smile. April said, “Beth you’ve got it. It is fool proof”.
Over the next few weeks the three girls left their jobs at the prison & set about establishing what they decided to call “The Chicago College for Young Women”.
They rented a former hostel & reached out to the city authorities. April & Beth’s back story of the New York Refuge proved to be very useful in opening doors.
During this time the killers contended themselves with killing three prostitutes confident that this relatively small number wouldn’t alert the Chicago mob that something out of the ordinary was going on.
The fact was that by now they simply couldn’t stop killing. The other thing that kept them going was their old friend “True Crime Monthly”. Much to their pleasure one of the editions of the magazine had an article about executions of female criminals at Tyburn in 18th Century London.
Lauren McQueen
Lauren McQueen was a mere 18 years of age when in 1756 she was forced up the ladder resting on the “Triple Tree” at Tyburn, as the gallows were known. This was a brutal time & the young girl had been condemned for stealing a few yards of lace. She screamed & wept as she was dragged up the ladder.
The executioner had tied her hands behind her back before they began their ascent. Once her feet were about six feet above the ground he took the noose dropped down to him by his assistant who was sitting on top of the crossbeam & placed it around the girl’s neck. He then pushed the panic stricken Lauren off the ladder.
The doomed girl wheezed, her mouth wide open, her breasts heaved under her thin white dress, her fingers wriggled & her legs flailed desperately. She was in obvious agony as the rope slowly strangled her. The tip of her tongue appeared from her gaping mouth, saliva ran down her chin. Her cheeks, which were wet with tears began to redden. By the time she hung dead & senseless her face was blue
Madeline Smith
In 1768 24 year old Madeline Smith was brought to Tyburn, in a cart. She was from a well to do background & had been granted the privilege of being executed on her own rather than being strung up alongside the usual criminal riff-raff.
Madeline had been convicted of beating one of her servant girl’s to death & the watching crowd bayed for her blood because of the nature of her crime.
Madeline was a pretty young woman with brown curly hair & a fair complexion which only served to excite the spectators even more. She wore her best black dress & she shuddered in terror as she was bound & noosed under the gallows wooden beam.
As the cart disappeared from under her feet her eyes & mouth opened wide as she felt the strangling pressure of the noose, her legs started to violently thresh as she “Ran” in the air. Her tongue began to protrude from her slowly darkening face.
Her struggles intensified & her legs at times kicked so high it lifted her dress above her waist displaying her private parts to the delighted crowd.
Much to the disappointment of the spectators the show only lasted a mere three minutes until Madeline’s limp body dangled from the gallows
Jenny Adams & Beth Thomas
On the 10th of August 1778 six malefactors four men & two young women, Jenny Adams & Beth Thomas were to be executed. Jenny & Beth were pickpockets who had been apprehended three times & the court had decided that enough was enough.
Despite the fact that they were only 21 years of age & “Somewhat comely” they must hang
The prisoners were brought to the gallows in two carts, the four men in one & Jenny & Beth in the other. The men’s cart was placed under the crossbeam first, the condemned convicts’ hands tied & the nooses placed round their necks. The horses then pulled the cart away leaving the malefactors kicking & wriggling on the ropes
By the time the men had expired Jenny & Beth were in a state of abject fright, sobbing & pleading for mercy. They both had to be supported on the cart as their hands were bound & they were noosed. Their wails were only silenced as the rope dug into their throats as the cart was driven away leaving them swinging free suspended by their necks on the ropes.
The watching crowd gave its usual roar as the two girls began their death struggle. Their skirts rustled & lifted as they kicked wildly. At times their toes pointed straight at the ground as they sought relief from the deadly pressure of the nooses around their necks.
Jenny & Beth’s mouths gaped open & their breasts heaved as they desperately tried to breathe. Their bodies twisted & writhed as their legs threshed the air. Their agony went on for five minutes before they finally swung dead on the scaffold
Three months after the decision was taken in January 1876 The Chicago College for Young Women was open for business. Cheryl, April & Beth met with about thirty potential students & narrowed this until they had the twelve girls they wanted.
The girl’s uniforms they decided on were similar to those of the New York Refuge apart from the fact that the jackets & hats were black, & the skirts were of a black & yellow tartan plaid
The killers decided that the girls would be able to stay until they were over 18 & at that point they would be told suitable employment & lodgings would be found for them.
With this in mind they had been careful in their selections to ensure that in about twelve weeks’ time the girls would begin to “Graduate” at the rate of one every two weeks or so.
Cheryl, April & Beth reluctantly concluded that it would be unwise to continue hunting prostitutes during this period consoling themselves with the anticipation of the fun they would be having in a few weeks.
