77] The Search For Kelly Burrows Continues
A week after the televised news conference the Burrows arrived at New Scotland Yard for an update
James Burrows asked Superintendent Mason, “Have you made any progress Superintendent?”
The police officer replied, “We are a bit further forward Mr Burrows. After we received the information from a member of the public that Kelly had been seen getting into a large black car with two tall black women, who appeared to be wearing uniforms of some kind we reviewed in detail all of the CCTV footage in & around Kensington High Street at the relevant time.
He went on,“We have identified a young girl, who we are pretty sure is Kelly, getting into a black Rolls Royce with two black women who were wearing uniform type clothing. Unfortunately the footage doesn’t show any of the their faces or the car registration number. I would like to show you this film to see if you can confirm that the girl is indeed Kelly”.
Mason pressed a button on his computer & turned the screen towards the Burrows
Edith gasped & exclaimed as the CCTV pictures appeared, “Yes Superintendent that is definitely Kelly.” Her husband nodded in agreement.
James said, “Even though you don’t have the registration number surely you should be able to trace such a distinctive car?”
The Superintendent replied, “We are working on that Mr Burrows, unfortunately in the Greater London area there are almost a thousand registered Rolls Royce’s like that one. We are currently working our way through this list & so far we have narrowed it down to four hundred black ones. Many of them are owned by embassies & the like. Is it possible a foreign government is trying to get at you through your daughter Mr Burrows?”
James replied, “I can’t see why they would have a reason to Superintendent. My business interests are exclusively in the United States & I have nothing to do with the defence industry or the military”
Mason nodded, “That is very helpful Mr Burrows it means we can focus on privately owned black Rolls Royces. We will share this with the public at the news conference later & appeal to owners of this type of vehicle to come forward so that we can eliminate them from our enquiries”.
James said, “Superintendent this must be heavily resource intensive for you. If you don’t have any objection I would like to bring in my private security people to assist with the leg work. They would be working totally under your control of course”
Feeling that he had little choice in the matter given the pressure he was under from the Commissioner who had clearly expressed the concerns of the Foreign Office that the Kelly Burrows case be cleared up as soon as possible Mason said, “That would be very helpful Mr Burrows
