80] The Net Begins to Close
The following Saturday the Club members, summoned by Sir Reginald gathered at his house. They were unaware that they were all now under 24 hour surveillance by Gary & his expanded security team of thirty. James Burrows was determined to spare no expense in trying to find out the fate of his daughter
The Smithsons, the Brownlows, the Jamiesons, MG & PT were all followed to the meeting by the expert security operatives brought across from the USA earlier that week
At the meeting Sir Reginald updated the Club members on his visit from the police
Sir John Smithson asked, “What do you think we should do Reginald?”
Sir Reginald shrugged & replied, “I don’t see that we have to do anything John. The police & the Burrow’s security people that have been brought in to help them have nothing to go on. The only reason they came here was that I had once owned a black Rolls Royce. There must be hundreds of such vehicles in the Greater London Area. In my view to mix metaphors they are clutching at straws while looking for a needle in a haystack”
He paused, thought for a moment & continued, “However I don’t think that we can be too careful. What I suggest is that we all keep our eyes open for anything out of the ordinary & reconvene next Saturday to discuss developments, if any”
The Club members agreed & on that note the meeting broke up.
That evening Gary & his senior team pondered what to do next
Maddy said, “I would have loved to be a fly on the wall today at Sir Reginald’s when they all got together”
Gary spoke slowly, “If what we suspect is true, then my guess is that today’s meeting won’t be the last. What we really need are ears in that house”.
Maddy smiled & said, “Why don’t we make that happen Boss? We tap Sir Reginald’s phone & cut off the power to the house. We intercept the inevitable call to the electricity provider & send in our guys in disguise to “Fix” it. They then bug the house”
One of the other Supervisors said, “Sounds like the right move to me boss. Only problem is that it would be highly illegal”.
Gary replied, “Don’t worry about that. We have already breached UK law by hacking these guys’ e-mails. I see part of my role in the next few days as keeping Scotland Yard at arms-length until we have something concrete to go to them with. If & when we get to that stage I will be creatively vague as to how we obtained any evidence we unearth”
The next Tuesday Maddy’s suggestion was put into effect. Sir Reginald’s property suffered an unexplained power cut, Bridgette reported it by phone & it was repaired by “Power Company Operatives” who bugged every significant room in the house.
As agreed the Club members met the next Saturday. Again they were all tailed by Gary’s security team on the way to Sir Reginald’s.
Gary & Maddy sat in the back of a van equipped with state of the art electronic surveillance equipment a hundred yards from the entrance to the drive leading to the house eavesdropping via the bugs planted earlier that week
Sir Reginald opened the meeting by saying, “Welcome all. Do any of you have anything to report? Has something happened last week that appeared to be out of the ordinary or given you any cause for concern?”
The Club members all shook their heads
Sir Reginald continued, “Well I have had no further visits from the police & the search for Kelly Burrows is no longer attracting much interest from the media. I suggest we continue to sit tight & be ever watchful”.
MG sighed, “Of course you are right Sir Reginald however I must say I miss the real thing. Writing stories is OK but it is a pale substitute for being able to watch a lovely young girl kick her heels in the air on the gallows as she slowly strangles to death”
Sir Reginald chuckled & said, “I am sure we all feel the same Sister Morrison however it is in our best interests to put off having another such event for now”
In the surveillance van Gary & Maddy looked grimly at each other
Later that day they played the tape of the conversations recorded in the house to James Burrows. After it had finished there was silence for a few seconds & then James said
“Dear God! These people are monsters!”
Gary replied, “It certainly seems that that is the case James. My view is that Kelly was only their most recent victim. Based on comments we heard it appears likely that they have murdered several other young women, heaven knows how many, before they killed your daughter”
James said, “What do we do next Gary?”
The security chief replied, “While we now seem to know what happened to Kelly we can’t go to the police just yet. What we have is damning however it was obtained illegally & everything is still circumstantial”
James exploded, “Dammit! I want these animals punished! Even if we do get the evidence all that will happen is that they will be sent to prison. The UK doesn’t have the death penalty & I want them executed for what they have done”.
Gary thought for a moment & said, “There is an alternative course of action we could take. It would be expensive, illegal & somewhat risky but if it worked you would get the justice you seek James”.
Burrows looked at his Head of Security & said. “Spell it out Gary”
