85] Maddy Continues her Research
I: America: 17th & 18th Centuries
The next day Gary left for Washington for a couple of days to carry out some work for the Burrows organisation in the capital.
That evening Maddy decided to look into the history of judicial hanging in her own country.
She learned that most condemned woman were determined to look their best when they were executed & almost invariably wore their best clothes to their final dance at the end of a rope.
It was also apparent that in the 17th & 18th centuries especially many of those executed were put to death for the alleged killing of their newly born or infant children.
What also struck Maddy was the young age of many of the victims & the disproportionate number of African & Native Americans amongst those who had been hanged.
These were the cases that interested her most.
Jane Champion: The first recorded female hanging in America was that of 22 year old Jane 1632 in Virginia for a now unknown crime.
Mary Latham: Mary was only 18 years of age when she was executed alongside her lover on the 21st of March 1648 for adultery in Massachusetts. She had the distinction of being the only female who was ever put to death in America for this offence.
The Salem “Witches”: In 1692 in Salem Massachusetts thirteen women of various ages were hanged in three groups with several weeks between each set of executions. They were taken to a large tree standing on the back of a horse drawn cart & noosed. Then the cart was driven away from under them leaving them suspended only by the ropes around their necks. It was reported that several of them struggled “Mightily” before they dangled lifeless from the hanging tree.
Esther Rodgers: 21 year old Esther was executed on Boston Common Massachusetts on the 17th of July 1701 for the murder of her illegitimate child.
Patience Sampson: Patience was a 23 year old Native American girl who was hanged in York Maine for murder on the 27th of December 1739.
Sarah Simpson & Penny Garret: 25 year old Sarah & 21 year old Penny were condemned for the murder of a child. Coincidentally also on the 27th of December 1739 “Piteous in their fear” they were taken to a tree in Portsmouth New Hampshire in the back of a cart. They were then hanged off the back of it to kick the air side by side.
Ruth Blay: On the 30th of December 1768 the reportedly “Comely” 26 year old school teacher also danced under the hanging tree in Portsmouth for the concealment of her still born child.
Rachel Wall: 19 year old Rachel became the last woman executed in Massachusetts when she was hanged on the 8th of October 1789 on a portable gallows on Boston Common. Somewhat harshly she had her neck stretched for stealing a bonnet from another teenage girl.
Maddy found the idea of these mainly young women convulsing & writhing on the end of their ropes very stimulating. Under her skirt her pussy was juicing up very nicely.
