III: America: 20th Century

Once she had composed herself & had a cigarette Maddy continued her investigations.

Dora Wright: 38 year old Dora [Black] became the first woman hanged in the United States in the 20th Century when she was executed in South McAllister Oklahoma on the 17th of July 1903 for murder.

Pattie Perdue: Pattie [Black] aged 25 had her neck stretched on the prison gallows in Forrest Mississippi along with a male accomplice on the 13th of January 1922 for robbery & murder.

Ann Knight: 23 year old Ann [Black] went to the gallows on the 13th of October 1922 in Leaksville Mississippi along with her male co-accused. They had been convicted of the murder of her husband.

Ada LeBeouf: Ada [White] was 38 years of age when she plunged through the gallows trap at Franklin jail Lousiana on the 1st of February 1929. Along with a male accomplice who was hanged after her Ada had been condemned for the murder of her husband. Unlike the cases of Pattie Perdue & Ann Knight the trial & execution of Ada LeBeouf attracted wide publicity.

Eva Dugan: The execution of 49 year old Eva Dugan [White] for the robbery & murder of her former employer became notorious because of what transpired during the actual hanging. On the 21st of February 1930 she was taken to the gallows in Florence prison Arizona. Her legs & arms were strapped & she was hooded & noosed. So far so good.

Unfortunately the hanging was botched & when Eva fell through the trap the impact of the noose around her neck decapitated her to the horror of the 70 witnesses present, especially the 7 women who were there. Not surprisingly all executions in Arizona after this were carried out in the gas chamber.

May Carey: 55 year old May [White] was hanged in Sussex County Delaware on the 7th of June 1935 for the murder of her brother for the insurance money. Two of her sons went to the gallows after her for their part in the crime.

Mary Holmes: Mary [Black] aged 35 became the last woman to be put to death in the United States by judicial hanging on the 29th of April 1937 in Rolling Fork Mississippi when she was executed along with her male co-accused for the murder of her employer.

Maddy had been to some of the places these women had been executed in & she found the idea of them, dressed not too differently from herself, being taken to the gallows & hanged quite intoxicating.

As she read on she found that the descriptions of those women who had been executed in the electric chair, the gas chamber & by lethal injection much less stimulating. She concluded that hanging was her favourite method of execution.
