IV: Britain: 18th Century: 1700-1799
Maddy moved onto the United Kingdom & she found that Britain had the longest & most comprehensive records of female executions of anywhere in the world which delighted her as she knew that nearly all of these would involve hanging.
As she had found during her research into earlier American executions she was quite shocked, & it had to be said excited, at the young ages of many of the girls who had had their necks stretched on British gallows. These were the accounts she liked best.
Martha Pillah: Murder was far from being the only capital offence in 18th Century England. Aged only 18 Martha was hanged at Tyburn on the 20th of May 1717. Her offence – shoplifting.
Mary Grote: Having been tried & convicted of “Petty Treason”, the murder of her husband, on the 18th of March 1738 16 year old Mary was dragged sobbing in terror on a hurdle to the main square in Winchester. She then had to wait & watch as two men kicked & writhed as they slowly strangled to death on the gallows in front of her.
Once life was extinct in the two bodies swinging from the scaffold having had to endure watching the hangings Mary was brought forward & chained to a wooden post. The executioner threaded a rope through a hole at neck height in the post which had been drilled there for exactly this purpose. He then wound it round Mary’s no doubt shivering tender young neck & pulled it back through the post. The hangman then used the rope to strangle the poor girl to death. Faggots were then placed round her body & set alight.
The fire reduced her & the post to ashes. In medieval times the penalty for “Petty Treason” was to be burnt to death however in the more “enlightened” 18th Century those women convicted of the murder of their husbands were granted the “privilege” of having the life choked out of them before their bodies were consumed by flame.
Maddy loved the 18th Century method of despatching murderous wives as they must have suffered terribly as the executioner’s rope slowly throttled them to death.
Elizabeth Harrard & Susanna Brown: 18 year old Elizabet & 21 year old Susanna Brown were taken to Tyburn on the 21st of December 1739 along with nine male malefactors. Elizabeth had been condemned for infanticide, the killing of her new born baby, & like Mary Grote Susanna had been convicted of “Petty Treason”.
Once the cart had arrived at the “Triple Tree” as the Tyburn gallows were known due to their three sided structure, Susanna was taken down from the cart & stood off to the side guarded by two “Turnkeys”, prison guards. The cart then moved to under the gallows crossbeam where the executioner & his two assistants tied the prisoner’s hands behind them & placed the dangling nooses around their necks. The cart was then driven away leaving Elizabeth & the nine male prisoners to kick & struggle as they slowly strangled to death.
Once the 10 prisoners swung dead on the gallows, just like Mary Grote, having had to endure watching the hangings Susanna was brought forward & chained to a wooden post strangled to death & her body burnt.
Catherine Connor: Catherine was 17 years of age when she was executed at Tyburn for forgery, i.e. counterfeiting, on the 31st of December 1750.
Elizabeth Jeffries: Elizabeth was from quite a well to do family however she feared that her uncle was going to disinherit her so she persuaded the family gardener to help her murder him. They were quickly caught, tried & condemned.
On the 28th of March 1752 21 year old Elizabeth & her male accomplice were taken by cart on the long journey to the gallows deep in Epping Forest, the terrified young woman apparently fainting several times on the way. On arrival as she was quite petite as well as being pretty Elizabeth was made to stand on a stool in the back of the cart so that the hangman could place the noose around her neck. The cart was then driven out from under the doomed pair leaving them to kick & struggle until they finally strangled to death.
Elizabeth Morton: Aged only 15 Elizabeth danced until she was dead on the scaffold on Gallows Hill in Nottingham for the murder of two small children on the 8th of April 1763.
Ann Beddingfield: Ann was another husband killer whose crime resulted in her feeling the rope being pulled tight round her neck after having been chained to a post. She & her lover who had participated in the killing were taken from Ipswich jail on the 18th of April 1763 to the town square. There 28 year old Ann had to wait while her paramour was hanged on the gallows before she was strangled by the hangman. Like Mary Grote & Susanna Brown her body was then burnt.
Frances Allen: Aged 19 Frances was hanged at Tyburn on the 7th of August 1771. She had been convicted of breaking into a house & stealing from it.
Mary Jones: Poor 18 year old Mary’s “Legs padded the air” under the “Triple Tree” at Tyburn on the 16th of October 1771. She had been convicted of shoplifting.
Susanna Underwood: Susanna was a mere 15 years of age when she was executed in Gloucester for arson on the 19th of April 1776.
Charlotte Gardiner & Mary Roberts: In 1780 London was ravaged by severe anti-Catholic riots which resulted in many deaths. The authorities were determined that this would never happen again & several of the rioters were arrested, amongst them were Charlotte aged 22 & Mary who was 23. On the 11th of July 1780 they were all executed on a specially constructed large gallows which had been erected on Tower Hill so that as many as possible could see the consequences of this type of behaviour.
Elizabeth Taylor: Like Frances Allen 18 year old Elizabeth was a burglar who paid with her life for her crime. On the 17th of August 1785 Elizabeth was hanged on the new gallows just outside Newgate prison. While this was an improvement on the Tyburn “Triple Tree” most of the condemned prisoners who met their fate on it still slowly strangled to death as they weren’t given much of a drop & this is what happened to poor Elizabeth.
Susanna Minton: Like Susanna Underwood Susanna Mintonwas another arsonist who paid with her life for her crime. The 17 year old died on the gallows at Hereford on the 16th of September 1786.
Sarah Shunston: 18 year old Sarah was hanged on the scaffold on the moor heath near Shrewsbury in Shropshire on the 30th of October 1791for the killing of her new born baby.
Elizabeth Marsh: Elizabeth had reached the ripe old age of 15 when she was condemned to death for the murder of her grandfather. On the 17th of March 1794 she was taken, sobbing & pleading for mercy, from Dorchester prison to the gallows which stood just outside the jail. A large crowd watched as she was noosed & the stool on which she had been made to stand was kicked away from beneath her. A contemporary account said that the young girl “Kicked & convulsed for some minutes” before she swung dead on the gallows..
Once she had finished reading about 18th Century English executions Maddy picked up her vibrator & went & lay down on the couch.
As she pleasured herself she pictured those executions in early 20th Century America she had read about. She imagined the terror of those American women not that long ago as they were led to the gallows.
She visualised the executions for Petty Treason in 18th Century Britain. The petrified anticipation of Mary Grote, Susanna Brown & Ann Beddingfield as they watched the hangings of their fellow prisoners & then experienced the agony of death by slow strangulation while chained to their wooden posts in the late 17th century.
Maddy imagined what it must have been like seeing the vulnerable & tender bodies of all those teenage girls wriggling, writhing, legs threshing under their long skirts & their faces slowly darkening as they slowly strangled to death on the gallows.
When she came, she came hard.
She went to bed & when she awoke the next morning she had another session with her vibrator thinking about those executions she had read about the previous evening.
