V: Britain: 19th Century: 1800 - 1849

After she returned from work & had something to eat Maddy returned to the computer to continue her research where she had left off.

Ann Mead: Aged 16 Ann was the first female to be executed in England in the 19th Century. She was hanged just outside Hereford prison on the 31st of July for poisoning a child. Despite her age the unwritten rule was that poisoners were never reprieved

Martha Chapple: Mary was another girl who was executed for the murder of a child. The 19th year old was hanged outside Newgate prison in London on the 1st of August 1803

Ann Hurle: 22 year old Ann was an educated young woman from quite a respectable background. She was tried, convicted & sentenced to hang at the Old Bailey in London for forging bank notes. On the 8th of February 1804 wearing a black dress & a white cap she was taken from Newgate & placed on a cart & taken to a specially constructed gallows outside the Old Bailey.

She apparently screamed & pleaded for mercy as she was taken to the place of execution. Once the cart disappeared from under her it was reported that she struggled & kicked for about three minutes her unsecured flailing legs lifting her dress up to “An immodest degree”. The spectators looked on in mesmerised horror as she tried to reach her neck several times with her hands which were bound together in front of her before she finally expired.

Mary Morgan: 17 year old Mary went to the gallows in Presteigne Wales on the 13th of April 1805. She had murdered her illegitimate child.

Elizabeth Godfrey: Aged 26 Elizabeth was executed at Newgate on the 23rd of April 1807 for the murder of her common law husband. She shared the gallows with two male criminals & while the men expired quickly poor Elizabeth writhed at the end of her rope for at least three minutes before she finally strangled to death.

Mary Chandler: On the 9th of April 1808 aged 19 Mary was hanged at Lancaster Castle having been caught while breaking into a house.

Edith Morrey: 24 year old Edith & her husband were wealthy enough to afford servants. They were sentenced to death for murder however at the time of their convictions Edith was five months pregnant. Her sentence was suspended until after she had given birth & then on the 23rd of April four months after the execution of her husband she was hanged on the public gallows outside Chester prison.

Sarah Fletcher: A large crowd watched as 19 year old Sarah Fletcher was made to mount the gallows on the roof of Horsemonger jail in Lindon on the 5th of April 1813. It was reported that the young girl who had murdered a child “Died hard”.

Catherine Kinrade: In early 1815 the normally quiet & peaceful Isle of Man was scandalised by a sensational case involving a love triangle that ended in murder. 19 year old Catherine was convicted of poisoning her sister so that she could marry her brother in law with whom she had been having an affair.
On the 18 of April 1815 the apparently lovely brunette who was described as having “Uncommonly interesting & handsome features” wearing her best blue dress was led from the only prison on the island to the gallows, which had been erected close to the edge of the shore next to the Irish sea, in a state of “Great agitation”. As very few residents of the Isle of Man had ever witnessed an execution, those that had would have had to have visited the mainland, a large crowd had gathered to watch the hanging.

After she had been suspended it was reported that Catherine struggled & convulsed for several minutes before the totally silent spectators. The only sounds that could be heard were the creaking of the crossbeam as it took the weight of the prisoner, the rustling of her dress & petticoats as her threshing legs kicked backwards & forwards & up & down & the horrible gasping as she slowly strangled to death. It was reported that once Catherine was dead her once lovely features were distorted & swollen & “Fully displayed the agony of her passing”.

Eliza Fenning: The petite & pretty 21 year old Elizia, having been convicted of attempted murder, mounted the Newgate gallows on the 26th of July 1815. She wore a white muslin dress & cap & had high laced lilac boots & after the drop her slim booted ankles & slender legs were well displayed as she danced on the scaffold her long white dress lifting & swirling up around her.

Hannah Docking: Hannah was one of the youngest females hanged in Britain in the 19th Century. Having been convicted of murder by the use of poison, hysterical with terror, she was dragged screaming & sobbing to the Newgate gallows on the 22nd of March 1819. She was 16 years old.

Bell M’Mennemy: The good looking 23 year old Bell, who was originally from Ireland, & was described as a “Good time girl” was sentenced to death for assault & robbery. She “Wept bitterly” when told there was to be no reprieve. Bell was marched to the gallows in the Saltmarket in Glasgow from Duke Street prison on the 23rd of October 1828 wearing a new white blouse & black skirt. Many people were there to witness the rare spectacle of the public hanging of an attractive young woman in Glasgow. It was reported that the prisoner “Struggled briefly” after the short drop.

Mary Ann Higgins: 19 year old Mary had her neck stretched on the gallows in Coventry on the 11th of August 1831 for the murder of her uncle.

Sarah Dalzely: Sarah was described as being “Tall, attractive, having long auburn hair & large brown eyes. The 24 year old young woman was condemned to death for the murder of her husband by the use of poison. Apparently the poor man had had the gall to object to Sarah’s promiscuous behaviour. On the 5th of August 1843 in Bedford she was executed in front of several thousand spectators. As she was only given a drop of some 18 inches the young woman took several minutes to die. It was reported that the 5 foot 9 inches Sarah was at least two inches taller after she was dead due to the stretching of her neck by the gallows rope.

Maddy was disappointed when she learned that the British had stopped executing murderous wives by slowly strangling them to death when chained to a post & replaced it by hanging in the latter part of the 18th Century

Catherine Foster: Aged 17 Catherine was condemned for the murder of her husband by poisoning. She kicked the air as on the gallows in Bury St Edmunds on the 17th of April 1847 in front of an estimated 2000 people.

Maddy was very aroused by the time she had completed reading about executions in Britain in the first half of the 19th Century however she resisted the urge to retire to the couch with her small battery powered “Lover” for the moment.
