I have noticed many Indian execution by hanging on women , they wear saree with a blue ribbon strip and white as main colour.

Is this a prison uniform or just coincidence

I believe it's a uniform, but I'm not an expert.

This is not a coincidence. Female convicts in Indian prisons wear uniforms that vary from state to state (jail manual of the state has that information). Even in a particular state there is flexibility. Convicts get a choice that is mostly between saree, salwar-kameez and maybe top and pajamas (in some states). But saree as uniform choice is common across all states. The color of the saree or the border also varies ( white is the color of mourning in India and is associated with traditionally dressed widows and hence is considered inauspicious for non- widows, hence the other colored uniforms). Though, probably white with blue borders is common (I have seen green and pink too, in some jails the color of the border signifies status of the prisoner, eg yellow border means a convict deputed as warder). All this aside prisons in India look far more chaotic and disordetly than seen on TV and movies. Since undertrials outnumber convicts by big margin a typical prison scene is far from a uniform blue-white. Plus, in a lot of jails even convicts aren't allotted any specific uniform. Many infuencial convicts get away with not wearing prison uniform. No woman has been executed in India since 1955 and we don't have any details on the ones before. Nobody really knows how is a female convict dressed for execution in India. This year in March 4 male convicts were executed and the media juiced up all the small details about the process for around three months continuously. There we found that although male convicts are dressed in white, they change in black for hanging ( this may be a carryover from the days of British Raj). One can expect something similar for female convicts. But the topic of female execution is almost a taboo in media, even the jail manuals don't anticipate a female executions and their processes are all male-centric. Coming back to the white saree with blue border that we mostly see in recent TV shows, that has almost become a convention for TV shows for the uniform of a female convict. The color choice probably gives maximum contrast between a convict and non convict and hence enhances the dramatic effect.

Rightly Put

Thank you. My partner and I role play and he wants me to wear a white saree with blue ribbon and I cannot find one anywhere. Now I know. Thank you.

On a semi related note, Paurashpur is expected to release today on Zee5 and Alt Balaji, and it has an Indian hanging scene. Keep a look out

The White Saree with Blue border , alongside white Blouse and White petticoat is a standard prison uniform in India. That is why we see this cloth for hanging scenes. It is one of my favorite hanging attire, alongside the the black victorian era dress.

In neighboring Bangladesh the uniform is also very similar. But as AJ333 mentioned before no women were hanged in India since 1955 so no one can be sure. Similarly no women were hanged in Bangladesh since its independence in 1971. Just like India its a Taboo topic in Bangladeh as well.
However, recently a woman was sentenced to be hanged in Bangladesh. An illegal photo of her was shared in social media while she was being transported from a local jail to the central women's jail. In the photo she was wearing a white saree, similar to the one in India. As she is a condemned prisoner, we can assume thats the standard hanging uniform saree. But as i said before, we cannot be sure.

I am sharing links of the news and her photo wearing the white uniform saree.

In the "News Article Link" she has picture from court. She is wearing a white Salwar Kameez, which is not an uniform. Its a normal clothing worn by girls and women across India,Bangladesh,Pakistan and Nepal.

The other "Link" shows her sitting on a wooden bench wearing a white uniform saree while being transported from one prison to another.

Great link. She is probably the most beautiful woman I have seen in real life who has been sentenced to death. And the uniform is great too. It bestows so much grace and dignity on the convict and makes the whole thing look ominously solemn. Sadly, by the time she is hanged (if at all) lot of that grace and the looks would be gone. I have been following her case and there seems to be some kind of frenzy out there in Bangladesh regarding her death sentence. (The case is remarkably sensational too, at first she came across as the victim and a prime witness, later it was revealed that she was in fact the mastermind of the whole conspiracy, and then things turned horrible bad for her. ). People seem to be dying to see her hanged. (I guess a couple of web series have also popped up so quickly, although they are very conservative in their approach and don't even have a handcuff sequence.). As an aside, the last known female hanging in Bangladesh was in Sylhet in 1937. There is a telefilm on that. (though it doesn't show her hanging)

Yes she is a preety woman. You should see her photos from before here arrest. She has lost much of her beauty since arrest and trial. Looks absolutely devastated after her death sentence. No one is yet sure if she will actually hang in the end or be sentenced to life in the supreme Court. Even if she hangs(not very likely, woman do not generally hang in this country) it will probably take years. But yes her entire murder case caused quite a sensation.
As for Karimunnisa, you are absolutely right. She was hanged during the British Raj not in modern day Bangladesh. I am from the Sylhet region of Bangladesh and her story is sort of a local legend. I heard about her from my parents as a child. In fact she hails from Longla(a region in Sylhet) and is distantly related to me, may be as a great aunt through my father's side. The Telefilm on her is not historically accurate or at least according to the stories that we heard as children. Her father was a Zamindar (feudal Lord) of Eta and her husband was Zamindar of Longla.,both in Sylhet region. She is related to me through the Longla family.

You can find more such real life stories if you go through Bengal Presidency Police Reports on Crime. The British were too good with keeping records. I found quite a few female execution stories. Most of them had poisoned their husband with the connivance of their paramours. Record keeping seems to have been in disarray since Independence. There have been around 1500 executions between 1947 and 1970s but we know only about 30-40 max. Till a few years back it was common knowledge (all newspapers used to write that) that there has been no female execution in India since independence. Then from somewhere a clip from 3 rd january 1955 cropped up from New Strait Times Singapore that a woman named Rattan Bai Jain was hanged in Delhi for poisoning 3 girls. And there is absolutely nothing about her anywhere in Indian sources. After a lot of research I found details of her case (it was quite sensational too, and she was no nameless peasant in some remote region but quite affluent woman who ran a fertility clinic, that too in the capital of the country). Some old books that have gone out of print have the story of her case. So sensational was her case that I found a chapter on her in a Danish book on crimes of the century ( I had to translate, ofcourse). But no mention anywhere in Indian sources. Compare her to Ruth Ellis, the woman hanged in UK ( also in 1955). I won' t be surprised if we come to know in future about more women executed in India/Bangladesh/Pakistan. ( Btw I found a list of women hanged in pakistan since independence in some very obscure university site, and there are about a dozen , a lit of who were hanged, probably together in 1980s)

great find...I too don't understand the language but I do know some keywords. they have just stopped short of showing the hanging. Even then this by far the farthest a south Indian TV serial has gone in a murder-WIP sequence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgksORFHVGo (commits murder and arrested)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPY22ZkTCos (sentenced to death in court)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzg49qN_Y-g (here she gets a death warrant for execution in 2 days)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fwBXA4tDT4 (health check (taking measures) on her )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGbDXesvWEw (last call to family)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb4rxb3xrms (they put her in a separate chamber for last-minute prayers and then take her on her last walk)

and then in the middle of her last walk she mysteriously reaches her home and everybody behaves as if she has been saved. (???)

Right - I too have been following it and was surprised with same twist
Thanks aj333

As far as uniforms - there is one more link https://youtu.be/tayGiicteJw
This one is same as the one in Pune Yarawada jail - Green sari - white blouse

Thanks for the awesome links

As for prison uniform in Bangladesh. This was the standard prison uniform saree in the 1980s and 1990s. The lady is also wearing this saree to her hanging. This saree is printed with the typical "prison stripes", difference is that men gets to wear striped "shirt/trouser" and women get to wear striped "saree/blouse".

I am giving the link. The prison saree wearing scene begins from 1:58:03.
Sorry for the bad video quality.

They both murdered two different bad guys, who are very influential, you know like corrupt politician or industrialists. So they were sentenced to hang for murder. They get married just before the hanging because that is what the lady asked as a "last wish", typically granted to condemned prisoner before execution. The guy excepts as he is going to hang anyway and was told that the condemned lady has the last wish to maary him. The twist is, this lady really loved the guy all through her life but couldn't end up together. The lady knew all along who the guy was so she wanted to marry as a last wish. The guy loves her too but due to family and other practical reasons never married her. So in the end they both get each other in marriage before being hanged. You know, the typical love story with a twist.

It sure looks like what you want and maybe the best you can get but is surely not the real thing. I mean It is not meant for the prisoners so is more refined, light stuff. While prison actual prison sarees are made of 'Khadi' (mostly handspun by inmates themselves) which is a very coarse fabric and is also quite heavy.
