Oh the Grand Guignol, wasn't that a French Horror magazine from the 19th century? I'm a fan of that just for artistic reasons. I love the color palette.

The original was a theatre in Paris, 'Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol' (The Theatre of the Great Puppet),
which operated from 1897 until 1962. But it's name has become a generic term for any artform with a horror theme.
The performances would commonly be in the form of short playlets, exploring all manner of horrors, such as insanity, panic or brutality.

The movie in question is a fictional murder thriller, but inspired by the life of Paula Maxa, one of the theatre's best known performers.
She gained the epithet 'the most assassinated woman in the world' as during her career from 1917 to the 1930s,
her characters were murdered more than 10,000 times in at least 60 different ways.

A quick scan through a copy of the movie shows very little of this, concentrating instead merely on a few throat slittings.
