In fact. When the tank guards of Katukov burst into Volokolamsk, December 20, 1941. they saw the corpses of eight Soviet patriots tortured by fascist executioners on the gallows in the city square. “In early November 1941, while crossing the front line near Volokolamsk, Konstantin Pakhomov’s group (it included 8 fighters, including two girls) was discovered by fascist patrols, who called for reinforcements. I had to take the fight, but the forces were too unequal.

Ours fought desperately. Even wounded, they did not give up and, bleeding, continued to fire. Only when this eight ran out of cartridges, grenades and petrol bottles were the Germans able to get closer. Several German soldiers pounced on each member of the group, tied their hands and led them into the city. They interrogated us one by one and brutally beat us. But Pakhomov and his comrades, experiencing excruciating pain, remained silent and did not betray their combat friends: after all, at that time several sabotage groups of military unit 9903 were operating in the Volokolamsk region.”

This is what we later found out about the tragic outcome of this story. After interrogating the fighters of Pakhomov’s group, the Nazis threw them out into the street. Exhausted by torture, they fell to the ground, and nearby they saw a gallows prepared for execution and German soldiers and officers near it. A quick death was inevitable.

Then, helping each other up, the boys and girls stood in a row, hugged each other and, singing “The Internationale,” marched towards the Nazis. In the first moments, the Nazis were stunned by such an unexpected attack by suicide bombers, and then, having come to their senses, they riddled them with bursts of machine gun fire. However, this was not enough for the angry Germans, and in an insane rage they dragged our already executed soldiers to the gallows.

The occupiers forbade local residents from removing these corpses from the ropes, and the Pakhomovites hung like ice blocks for a month and a half in the city square. A rally in the newly liberated Volokolamsk.
